Theft

Analysis and evaluation

Craig Beauman presents an analysis and critical evaluation of the actus reus of theft

This article is relevant to AQA A-level Paper 1 and OCR A-level Component 1.

Theft and its closely related offences were codified under the Theft Act 1968. The Act was a response to the Criminal Law Revision Committee’s recommendation to provide a thorough reform of a whole area of substantive criminal law. Its report, which included the draft theft bill, was presented to Parliament in 1966. Historically, the law on theft had been contained in numerous Acts, stretching from 1275 to 1967, and had proved to be confusing, complicated and generally controversial.
