Lady Hale is a pioneer for gender equality in the law and at the forefront of changing judicial nature and attitudes in the twenty-first century. As the first female President of the Supreme Court, she has been able to demonstrate her motto — ‘women are equal to everything’ — and campaign for greater diversity in judicial appointments.
From being the only woman on the highest appeal court in 2004, Hale is now one of three female Supreme Court Justices, alongside Lady Black and Lady Arden. In the case of Re D, about the human rights implications of a council’s application to keep a teenage boy who lacks capacity and competence in residential care, there was a majority of female judges on the panel of five Justices, which is a first for British justice.
