The Supreme Court was created by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 to replace the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords as the UK’s highest appeal court, independent of government or parliamentary influences. It is at the top of the hierarchy of courts and sets precedents for other courts to follow. It may depart from its own previous decisions if these are considered to be incorrect, out of date or to create uncertainty.
It is located in Parliament Square, London, on the opposite side of the square to the Houses of Parliament. The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council is also located on this site. It consists of the Justices of the Supreme Court, and hears final appeals from some Commonwealth countries, overseas territories and Crown dependencies.
