Isle of White Council v Platt (2017)

This case involved a father who had been fined by his local authority for taking his daughter on a family holiday to Florida without the school’s permission. The decision was important for schools and parents as it clarified the meaning of ‘regular school attendance’. Parents can be prosecuted under s.444 of the Education Act 1996, which creates a strict liability offence if they fail to ensure regular attendance of their children: ‘If a child of compulsory school age who is a registered pupil at a school fails to attend regularly at the school, his parent is guilty of an offence.’
